Coupled with my Harmon Kardon AVR-500, I get an incredibly precise sound stage , and a very full sound. The shielded satellite cubes enclose 3-inch long-throw drivers with a special circuit to extend high-frequency response. The subwoofer cabinet encloses a 5 3/4-inch woofer in an acoustic suspension cavity, firing into a bandpass filter cavity for improved bass efficiency. These can be great speakers for home theater on a budget or casual music listening, if you are willing to spend the time to put the passive woofer in the right place.

The upper bass and lower midbass tended to come from the sub, with a good bit of out-of-band noise issuing from the port. Probably the worst design decision made in this system was not to include a low-pass filter beyond the acoutic filter presented by the bandpass enclosure. So, what good is there to say about the bass module?
I do not think that I am getting response all the way to 20kHz but the way these speakers are, you can't really expect that anyway. For relatively large cones, these speakers are still somewhat detailed in the high end, and the frequencies all seem to be present. I have no major complaints, given the limitations still imposed on the satellites by their small enclosures.

I had heard that cube systems have an advantage in imaging, because of the single driver. I had also heard that having five identical speakers is the best approach to surround sound, hands down. I am immersed in the best sound that I've ever experienced, and I used to own audiophile speakers. I recently came into a set of the 2-channel version of the Henry Kloss-designed Ensemble IV speakers from Cambridge Soundworks.

If one needs home theater in a smaller room, however, it would be impossible to find a better speaker system than this one. DTT2200's and other 5.1 computer speaker setups. I would, however, reccomend the KLH 9912 instead. There are better values out there if you look around, you will find something that isn't so picky about the placement. I recognize the potential of these little guys, but honestly have mixed feeling about the sound. Unpacking The System As you unpack Ensemble IV, please Ensemble IV examine each speaker unit carefully for signs of shipping damage.

In fact one can loose interest in music entirely if this is both an audio and a video system. This speaker system is fine for home theater if you are not looking for too much. The subwoofer is excellent for what it is, the center channel may also not be sufficient, but it performs well for a home theater system, for the price an excellent value. For $150 get it if you can, the surround speakers alone sell for over $100 on ebay. If you decide you don't like it you could make money by selling it. At that price point the only other options are cheap mass market speakers which are almost certain to sound worse.

Like I said though, these can be GREAT speakers for the money if you work at it. The satellites are so small, that you can place them in almost any room without changing the character of the room too much, which is cool. The value is great, especially during the annual march madness sales at HIFI.com.

This is a great set of speakers for anyone looking to get into surround sound without breaking the bank. Midrange is lacking, especially with explosions. When fronts are replaced with bookshelfs, it sounds more complete and warm, but the high frequency is taken away.
It is certainly much better than the Acoustimass 3. The Ensemble IVs, however, while performing better in the midrange and treble, cannot quite match the bass capability of the acoustimass 3. In reviewing these speakers, I powered them with only 5 watts per channel. I am currently looking into a larger, 30WPC amplifier, but even with the five watts, these speakers demonstrated their capabilities well, filling a fairly large room with rich, pleasing sound. The only thing lacking was a somewhat lighter bass from the bass module, but this is likely because of the low amplifier power.
About Amplifier Power Ensemble IV can be used safely to • If you’re not happy with what If at a given volume level the you hear and are having trouble play music with most amplifiers sound is consistently “grainy” or... A quasi-anechoic MLS frequency-response measurement showed an extremely flat response (+1 dB) from 300 Hz to 2 kHz, a 3-dB level rise from 2 to 3 kHz, and a ±2.5-dB variation from 3 to 9 kHz. The satellite cone resonance produced a 7-dB rise between 9 and 12 kHz, followed by a steep drop that reached the original reference output level at about 16 kHz. A close-miked measurement of the satellite’s output showed an impressively flat response of ±1.5 dB between 160 Hz and 1 kHz.
I blew the subwoofer one day while listening to music too loud. Cambridge SoundWorks fixed and replaced the woofer for free under warranty, no questions asked. I will need a bigger subwoofer to shore up the bass on this system, You can bet it will be from Cambridge.
Since there have been some questions asked about small speakers, I thought I would write about this set. This set has been discontinued, but can still be found on eBay. I will be evaluating this set in appearance, output levels, and sound quality. I watch a lot of movies and the system sounds great, though I do have to turn the bass on my amplifier all the way up. Placement in a corner when I moved into a new house helped the bass problem greatly.

I would like to bring some reason to this review process. These speakers are not good for music listening. There simply is not enough capability from this small, single paper driver to deliver music for a listener, in an enjoyable fashion.
